Bio: Quan Bui Ngoc

Bui Ngoc Quan

As a child, Quan Bui Ngoc studies dance at the National School in Vietnam. In 1996, he joins the ballet of the Hanoi Opera House. In 1997, Bernadette Tripier invites him to France where he will stay a year at the school of Istres and discover European contemporary dance. He goes back to Vietnam on a regular basis to work with the opera and to set up his own work. In 2002, he starts working with Alain Platel: Wolf, followed by vsprs (2006),pitié! (2008) and C(H)ŒURS (2012). Today he still functions in the company as an artistic assistant from Alain Platel.

He dances in Bolero by Lisi Estaras (September 2009); co-creates I know a place (November 2009), a project of the Istres Dance School. Quan Bui Ngoc creates Jump or Fall(November 2009), together with Juliana Neves and Samuel Lefeuvre. Since 2010, he has worked several times with the conservatory in Ghent. He set up a project with theatre students, called Picnic. Quan also teaches and gives workshops on a regular basis (France, Germany, Hungary, Brazil). In 2011, he joins the Australian Dance Theatre to tour with Be Your Self, the year after he start collaboration with the swis 3art3 company as director and choreographer for the dance- and music theater project and later Untold. The following years he works on and gets experienced projects with non-dancers such as children for a war memorial in Ypres and prisoners in the jail of Bruge. The latest European project was a collaboration with Platform K for the duet between a disabled dancer and a musician.

In between his European projects, Quan started to work on projects in Vietnam introduced by a series of classes and workshops in The school of dance in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh and the school of arts from the army in Vietnam.  In 2012 he got invited by the festival “Autumn Melodies from HBSO and created his first piece, the duet “Magnetic” with Samuel Lefeuvre. Following he organized with HBSO the tour for Alain Platel’s “Out of context” in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This tour left a strong impression on the Vietnamese audience. A summer after this tour he created The Roof with the Vietnamese dancers from HBSO. A year later, the piece was programmed in the festival “European contemporary dance meets Asia” organized by the Goethe Institut, directing the creation “Blurry” for Evaduda dance company in Budapest

 The artistic assistance of Alain Platel (Les Ballets C de la B) for “Nisht schafen”  “Requiem pou L”  and Le Sacre du Printemps project in 2018.
